	Sitemap Lineal Accelerator Lineal accelerators are pieces of equipment that have been used since the late 70’s and they have suffered different changes. Differently from cobalt pumps, they generate radiation through electricity, for this reason their use is safer and also because they do not emit radiation whilst they’re not in use. Besides, they can generate different radiation intensities, what makes it easier to treat tumors located in any site of the body and resulting in fewer side effects. The newest models have a system that allows the protection of organs (multileaf collimator) shaping the radiation beam according to the volume that has to be treated, avoiding the use of those heavy and uncomfortable protections; now the conformation of the beam is done while visualizing the tumor and the internal organs through a computerized tomography, this assures more exact results and limits the possibility to leave untreated areas due to improper protections. One more important characteristic about accelerators is that they can generate a special type of radiation based on electrons which allows to treat superficial lesions such as those located in the skin, preventing radiation from getting into inner structures. This cannot be done with cobalt bombs. In Mexico there are several cities in which you can find linear accelerators, nevertheless many of them are reconstructed pieces of equipment, this means they are being reused. They are usually imported from hospitals found in the United States and they were replaced by new equipment. Some of these accelerators only work with low energy, or they don’t have the multileaf collimator which shapes the radiation beam, or they don’t have the system of electrons.
